Just developing an idea here…. Bear with me a moment….

P.F.C. Jessica Lynch is now America’s sweetheart. Yes, she is a Hero! Injured, captured, tortured, and rescued, in a word…awesome. Her rescue couldn’t have happened at a more opportune time. All the pundits were saying crap about the plan being flawed or stalled or whatever. The Lynch rescue changed all that. The momentum of the war suddenly shifted to Baghdad’s eventual fall and the ruthlessness of the Saddam regime revealed. Mullah’s told civilians to stay home. It all began to turn very well for our troops.
Of course, that’s all from a Media point of view. I was just thinking that the American media has Captured Jessica Lynch. My question is will they torture her too? The cover of Time, Newsweek, on Good Morning America, and Letterman every media outlet will look to exploit her. Will she fall into the Celebrity trap only to be spit out when the ratings fall? Has she gained this status because she is a young attractive white woman? I guess being a TV Junkie has jaded my view of a good thing. For now I’ll just celebrate her rescue and keep watching.

I’ll never forget that pass as long as I live. The Atlanta Falcons were up by 4 points. They were just about to beat the San Francisco 49ers. With time running out, the 49ers were marching down the field. I really hated the Niners; I used to think they were the axis of evil in the football world. Jerry Rice breaks free down the sideline. He never looked back, as he held up his arms, the ball just floated perfectly over his outside shoulder into those hands of gold. Touchdown! Falcons lose again. Just Damn! As much as I despised the Niners, I had to say that that was a damn fine play. The best catch I’ve ever seen to this day. My team lost…took a beating…but Damn! What a play!
I was nine maybe ten years old when my Dad took me to see Meadowlark Lemmon and the Harlem Globetrotters in the new Omni Arena. Boy could they play basketball! Dribbling, shooting, passing, they had the fundamentals down pat. The only thing that bothered me was the cheating. Those guys could cheat! It was impressive. The poor Generals never had a chance. The Globetrotters traveled, distracted the referees, and used illegal equipment like mini trampolines. It was definitely a show! The Generals should have won because they played fair, but that’s not how life is.
Why am I reminiscing about these glory days in sports memory you wonder? Well, I believe I am re-living these moments all over again. I am one of those War watchers. Glued to the War coverage every waking moment of the day, I listen to analysis, watch the experts pontificate over strategic planning, and just plain enjoy watching things blow up. I sit in my big chair smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee (because beer is out for another 85 days) cheering for my team to bring home the big win. I sit in astonishment as my boys fumble the ball and blow themselves up in the first weekend. Just Damn! Marching down field to the fifty miles away line, I think we’re about to score the big one…a holding call. Damn! Meanwhile, the defense is making a beautiful goal line stance. I hate to admit it but the Tactics are evil yet ingenious. A fake surrender play is beautifully executed. Then the ole suicide car bomber trick takes its toll on my team. The Iraqi army is playing like the Harlem Globetrotters of War. They cheat at every turn and as much as I hate to see my teams get beaten, I have to give credit to those wily Iraqis. They are making some great plays. The only problem is that war is not some game. This is for real and real people are fighting and dying. Hell, the instant replay is great though!

I really really like this story. Maybe because I've thought about doing the same thing...If only I could travel backward in time...Just Damn!

Is it just me? Blogger went down...Just Damn!

War is Hell! Hell for anything else that is newsworthy. Thank God for ESPN. At least I can keep up with some sports scores. What is going on around the world besides this war? Does anyone know?
There have always been two rules I follow when watching “The News.” I ask myself two simple questions to try to keep things in perspective. Why are they showing me this? What are all the possible explanations for this particular story? There is always more to the story than meets the eye. The second question and most telling would be what are they NOT showing me? News time is limited so not telling me about an event is almost as important as the event being related. We will show non-stop war coverage so that we can hide…. What are they hiding from us?
