We’re back from the mountains. The family had a great time camping at Cooper’s Creek. I got that special feeling when my son said, “Daddy, this is the best day of my life.” Setting up camp went smoothly. Tents went up first, then firewood, and finally the chuck wagon. The camp host Jeb was a retired gentleman complete with hiking boots and reddish white beard. He offered me some “dry” firewood, which I gladly accepted. I had brought some wood but not nearly enough. Now, Priscilla was already worried that some freaky mountain man would kidnap the children in the middle of the night. So I cringed when Jeb offered this little tidbit. “Two days ago a 2 year old fell face first into the Campfire. He was taken to the hospital in Blairsville then flown to Augusta,” he told us. Great! More for Priscilla to worry about. The fishing was Great! My son Quint caught his first trout. After that he said, “This is the best day of my life!” It only rained on us for about 20 minutes, just enough to teach preparedness. We are definitely going camping again. Hopefully soon.
It's time to hit the mountains. After a quick planning session and list making, the trip is a go! The devil's in the details. I decided to head into the Chattahoochee National Forest. In my single days, I spent many a weekend trout fishing up there. I believe we'll go to Deep Hole or Cooper's Creek. The Campgrounds are along the same stream. The wife is realy freaked out about someone "stealing" the kids while we sleep. She wants to cram everyone in one tent. I think all the horrific stories in the news about child molestation, rape, kidnapping, have her paranoid. I'm not worried, my best friend is coming along. Oh well, I got to go camping now. I need to get ice and beer. If you don't hear from me by Saturday send out a search party.
Well, I finally got all the technical difficulties worked out. It put me off Blogging for a while. I think it’s time to go camping. I just can’t figure out where. I’m getting psyched about it. I just made a spontaneous suggestion that started sounding real good. The mountains are a great place to go during the summertime. I think the kids will have a blast too. I like playing in the campfire, trout fishing, and just laying around. Although I haven’t decided where to go, I want to pick an out of the way place. DeSoto Falls looks good. So does Amicalola Falls. I think Moccasin Creek is the best choice so far. I don’t want to drive more than a few hours, and we need a site with semi-developed facilities. I’m not talking RV camping here. We will all sleep in a tent. I don’t want to cheat on the experience. If the kids were a little older we would backpack on some trails along the Appalachian Trail. Well, I’ve got lots to plan. I want to leave Tuesday afternoon and return on Thursday afternoon. I’ll take lots of pictures for you Georgian and Non-Georgian readers.
