FLLRUNNING.NET is an informal, personal page and is intended to read like a newsletter.
I purposely do NOT use Frames, plug-ins or add-ons. I want the person with the most primitive browser to access this page and not have risk of intrusion of possible destructive elements. I have to apologize if navigation is inefficient. Yet, I hope you'll enjoy.
Should you see any boo-boos, please give me a heads up so that I may correct. Thanks

CAPSULES

GFLRRC's Three For The Road Series:
Will be comprised of the races below - more information will be forthcoming on
GFLRRC's Website
  • Feb 6th . . Maroone Rotary 5K Run/Walk, Downtown Ft. Lauderdale.

  • Feb 26th . 5K For A better Day, Chris Evert Childrens Hospital, Broward Medical Center.

  • Mar 13th . St. Paddy's 4-Miler, Tradewinds Park

  • Series Standings after the 5K For A Better Day
Clip from Coach Howard's 80th Birthday now on YouTube.
Back in August when Howard turned 80, there was a group run/celebration at Pompano Community Park. Idea was for friends to run to collectively log 80 miles (not a problem). Channel 6 News was on hand to film a short segment that was aired on the evening news. Howard also gave a few good tips. Click here to see the Channel 6 segment and here to visit Howard's web site.

Faster Marathon Times - Neat Radio Interview
I listened to a segment on the NPR program "It's Only A Game" saturday, July 18th, enjoyed and want to share link to this segment. It had to do with how the tough financial times are promoting race participation. Interview is friendly and kind of a different perspective from the doom-and-gloom of the economy.
Go to the webpage for the saturday, July 18th'show and click on the link labeled "Faster Marathon Times" (my quotes) to pull up the player.

Nice online article about a bud, Ronnie Levy
Ronnie's a bud and was featured in an article at Runtheday.Com.
Ronnie's from Philadelphia and runs from time to time in South Florida events when Herb's health permits. Good People!
Don't know how long this link will be active. Also see main page of runtheday.com for Pennsylvania running info.

    GONE IN FOUR SECONDS"
Not running-related, but a serious concern in South Florida. Identity thieves are targeting drivers of tall vehicles (SUV's, RV's, Vans etc.) at gas stations and are grabbing purses from front seat while victim is pumping gas. Vehicle height shields thieves from view of victim. Please visit Sheriff Ken Jenne's site and look for "Staying Safe" and "Gone In Four Seconds" to the right of "A Message From Sheriff Ken Jenne". Click to [view] the video. The crime re-enactment is an eye-opener. It was also recommended to photocopy cards in your wallet (front and back) so that you'd have numbers should you ever be a victim yourself or lose your wallet.

    MARATHON TRAINING PROGRAMS AND RUNS

I'm not in a position to recommend or promote one particular marathon training program over another. Virtually every running club has a marathon training program or support group. Miami Tropical Marathon also has a marathon training program. Please check sites of the individual local running clubs as well as sites for the local running stores and other running organizations listed in my Running Links below.

See Sharon Robb's participant sport web page.

    SELECTED UPCOMING EVENTS

Please verify with organizers. Events are often cancelled or rescheduled, sometimes on short notice.

Info is taken generally from the South Florida Running Forum Calendar, but other reliable sources might be used.
Links may be to the managing organization's general website rather than to the specific event itself, particularly with races in the distant future.
Many of these events have online registration through Active.com where you may also possibly find information for events that don't have their own website.

    1. Before the storm, print the Home Damage Assessment photos and keep them handy for reference.
    2. After the storm passes and it's safe to go outdoors, survey the damage to your home.
    3. Compare your home to the four homes pictured on the page you printed out, and select the one that best represents the condition of your home for damage level and/or flood level. It doesn't matter if you live in a single family home, condo, townhouse, apartment, duplex or mobile home.
    4. Call the Broward County Hurricane Hotline at 3-1-1 to phone in a damage assessment report. If you still have power and access to the Internet, return to this page and click on the Report Your Damage below.
    5. You will be asked to provide your street address, city and zip code, and the number of the picture that best represents the level of damage to your home.

Remember, you must have access to the photos to make a report, as Hurricane Hotline call takers will only be able to accept numbers "1-4" as damage levels and "5-6" for flood levels.

Resident reports will provide a critical early indication of where major damage has occurred. These reports do not constitute a request for individual assistance and do not replace the normal grid-by-grid assessments performed by County assessment teams.

I found a site for Pro-Tec Products. Site also give helpful info about various injuries. You can also access the site via www.injurybegone.com .

Another visitor recommended a www.heel-that-pain.com product that sells for about $25.

My personal spin... Get supports or an orthotic shoe insert (Spenco has a good one) at the first sign of pain on the bottom of the heel, especially if you're approaching middle-age. Also, ice application and stretching exercises could help.

Happy that this game is still online. We're getting into the winter season. Object is to roll giant snowballs and bowl down as many unsuspecting ice-skaters as you can. Also not running-related, but is a good goof and pleasant diversion while you're waiting for your emails to download. Appealed to my sense of divilment ;-) . It's more of an animation than something intended to challenge serious gamers. Here is the link to the Snowbowling game.

Christmas - Track Santa on NORAD's Website:
For kids at heart, people with young children or grandchildren, or anyone who might be intrigued by NORAD's mission to protect Santa and track his progress, you can log onto www.noradsanta.org

A Yahoo! search for +norad+santa returned a few interesting, maybe even nostalgic sites such as one on CONELRAD and on Janes websites. We "post-war babies" might relate. I liked this one ( ) on CONELRAD's site. Jane's also has an article at . Apparently, this started back in 1955 when a young boy misdialed a phone number and got the unlisted number of CONAD (NORAD's predecessor or part of NORAD) by mistake. The commander (or director) whose number the boy called, realized the mistake and carried on a long conversation with the boy assuring him that NORAD (or CONAD, whichever) would guarantee Santa a safe trip. Thus, an idea and tradition was born. Don't recall if and how this info got to the public before the internet. In 1964, there was an LP (vinyl record) about the journey that also included some songs on the flip side. Today, the operation is run by a team of volunteers from Cheyenne Mountain and Peterson Air Force Base, who, supported by donations, hosted an estimated 100 million visits last year.

American Stroke Association Marathon Training Group:
Training for Disney and Bermuda Marathons and Half-Marathon, and the Palm Beach Half Marathon. They'll meet at Running Wild on saturday mornings at 6:30. For information, call Running Wild at 954-565-9400, and ask for Liz. She is there mondays, tuesdays and wednesdays from noon to 4 PM, but if you call at another time, anyone in the store will be happy to help.

Stroke Awareness... Is it a stroke?
The SAT - smile - arms - talk

The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say any bystander can recognize a stroke asking three simple questions:
  • Ask person to smile
  • Ask person to raise both armes
  • Ask person to speak a simple sentence

  • If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of nonmedical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage."
    PASS IT ON...............

    Is It A Heart Attack?
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, can bet that at least one life will be saved.
Read this... It could save your life!!
Let's say it's 6.15 PM. and you're driving home (alone of course), after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset, and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home.
Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.
In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.
Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

    IDENTITY THEFT ISSUES:
Some subscription services will return social security number of a vehicle's registered owner. Key code also available by inputing VIN. Suggest you cover the VIN plate on your vehicle's dashboard.

    OTHER SECURITY ISSUES:
  • Put your purse in the trunk BEFORE you leave home, not at the jogging site, and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Photocopy contents of your wallets, specifically credit cards, as they usually have contact numbers imprinted on the cards. (Thanks for the suggestion, Meg).
  • Carjacking Threat: I hear there is a new scam where potential car-jackers stick something on your rear window to obstruck your view when backing up. When you leave the car to remove the paper, they jump in and take off with your car and purse. Solution: back up anyway and remove the paper at a distant location.

    STATE OF FLORIDA UNCLAIMED PROPERTY:
The State of Florida has a website where you can search to see if you have any unclaimed money due to you. Address is: http://up.dbf.state.fl.us/_search.cfm and it is maintained by the Florida Departmet of Financial Services, Bureau of Unclaimed Property. Totally legitimate. At the moment, I am pursuing a claim for a small amount.

    Digital TV Conversion Help:

Transition to Digital TV has been made. There are still a few UHF stations you may be able to receive on your analog set (such as channel 56 in Miami), but practcally speaking, you can now view stations either through cable, satellite, using a TV with a digital tuner, or using a converter box on an older analog TV.
You also need a proper DTV antenna, even if new-type rabbit ears.
Darren Alline of WPLG, recommends Antennaweb.org to assist in antenna selection specific to your own street address. Great find! That site is aimed at selecting an outdoor antenna. If indoor rabbit-ears work, great! Otherwise, plan on an outdoor antenna.

A very-well informed friend personally uses and recommends a Winegard HD7697P antenna available at Amazon.Com for about $120 or less. It covers VHS upper-end frequencies, while many antennae don't.
While channels 2-6 have been shifted to UHF, channels 7-13 remain in the VHF band so an antenna covering upper vhf band is needed if you still want to receive channels 7-13. This specific antenna is designed for fringe areas, up to 60 mi., and is directional.
My friend also recommends (as does Antenna Web) including an antenna amplifier if you use splitters or have long cable. Also, don't chintz on quality of cabling. RG6U coax is recommended.

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/tvq.html is a site with very technical information from FCC about specific stations. May be above heads of most of us.

See The Government's Digital Transition site. You can purchase converters at various retail stores such as Radio Shack and Walmart, but linking on to the above website will allow you to apply to receive coupons good for $40 toward purchase of each of two converter boxes per household.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_CECB_units for comparison of Coupon Eligible Convertor Boxes. Thanks much to the article's author!
See this hulu TV clip for DTV info (humorous).
