A special thanks goes to my mother, Mary (Barrett) Young, for gathering, keeping, hoarding, and finally passing on to me the histories of our families. Following is a special treasure find and some peek at our family's trait for keeping these records.

In A.D. 1640-45, A company of English from near London settled on the Island of Nassau (now Long Island). In an early history of L I published in 1837 it is related that New town L I was first settled in 1855, A Thomas and A John Morrell being land owners there, presumable the latter, as John seems to be the name most used in our branch of the family.

This old history and also a later one tells a story which is familiar to some members of our family now living. The story is that in the war of , 1776, in which both our great-grandfather and grandfather took part, our great-grandfather got leave to go home to see his sick wife. The English army were camped between Flushing and Jamaica (he lived in or near Jamaica) when he met Commander Hamilton who would not let him pass, so they had a fist fight, and our Great-grandfather was badly beaten, but not killed. The English officer got a good beating too as Morrell had a hoe in his hand and he did not spare it.

Note, These and the following records have been gleaned from old letters, courthouse records, and a very few family records, and are quite incomplete.

Compiled and arranged by Phoebe Birch Morrell, 1915.

While I never knew Mrs. Morrell, I would love to have met her. I appreciate her writing this down. Thank you, Aunt Phoebe, for that wonderful story. (I still want to know if he made it home.)

Look around a bit and tell me if you like what you see. I always enjoy hearing from folks. Feel free to put a note in the mail.
