History of Salem UMC
Salem has a long and fascinating history dating back to 1824. The church was organized in that year, and a log structure on five acres in northwestern Newton county was selected as the worship site. This plot includes the present cemetery. According to old minutes preserved in the Emory University Library, the church was part of the Yellow River Circuit of the Athens District of the South Carolina Conference.
Sometime between 1865 and 1870,
a new church building was constructed- records show Salem Church
was admitted to the Conyers Circuit of five churches in 1901.
In 1903 a resolution was passed asking the Trustees of
Salem Campground to transfer a site for a new church building -
this was in exchange for the old church site. Work was
immediately begun on the present church structure. The church
register shows a membership of 285 in 1903.
Most importantly, history,
Christian tradition and values continue though the prayer, love
and efforts of our church family - we are still making history at
Salem! Won't you come and take part in this community of
faith? We welcome you to worship with us at your first
opportunity.
