- Atlanta police found the stripped shell on 10/21/02 (the next day) but there was no communication to Dekalb county police (who took the police report). Six months later the detective calls & tells me the news. How did Dekalb county police finally find out the car had been recovered? The impound lot was applying for ownership of the car (so they could crush it) & it came up stolen. When I tried to buy the Malibu back (maybe rebuild?) the impound lot wanted $1800 in storage fees ($10/day x 180 days).
- Grant's "No Wheel, No Steal" system is JUNK! My car was stolen with no steering wheel - they used a big set of pliers on the Grant hub. ('70s power steering with too much assist!)
- The thieves left my glasses, checkbook and the most valuable part on the car, the 8.5” Grand National rearend (stock G-bodies like the Malibu have the weaker 7.5"). After weeks of calls the impound lot owner finally let me pull the rearend for $200.
- 2002 specifications on the '78 Malibu: '73 350: stock '993 heads, unknown cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Road Demon Carb (waste of $, way too rich), HEI with Mallory coil and cap, Hooker Competition headers, Torque Tech True Dual exhaust, MTS fabricated crossmember (not worth the $, buy a crossmember from Iceman!), Edelbrock (Eibach) Springs, GM Remanufactured TH700R4, 2500rpm Torque Converter (I discovered I prefer manual transmissions).
