February Comments

This month I would like to share a story and my thoughts on it. The story is by Robert Van De Weyer from the book CELTIC PARABLES.

“An Act of Gratitude”

A very old man went out one day onto the land beside his house and began planting fruit trees. A young man walked by. “What are you doing?” the young man asked. “Planting fruit trees,” the old man replied. “But you will not see fruit in your lifetime,” the young man said. “The fruit I have enjoyed in my lifetime,” the old man said, has been from trees that people before me planted. So to express my gratitude of them, I am planting trees to give fruit to those who come after me.”

The story that Mr. Van De Weyer relates reminds me that we will not always see the results of our actions. We are called upon as Christians to share all that we have with those who are in need. We may not always know what that sharing means for some one else. As we have been blessed by the “planting” of others, so we are to bless those who come after us by our “planting.” So what kind of fruit are we planting for those who come after us?
